Commander’s Palace – 1403 Washington Avenue New Orleans, LA 70130 – Right off of the plane we met my friend and some out of town guests at an upscale restaurant called, Commander’s Palace, where the special was 25 cent martinis (25 cents!), but limited to three per person (I had all three). They also had a 2-course lunch special. We tried the turtle soup (not pictured, but they’re famous for it apparently), the smoked pork entree, and the shrimp with grits. We finished out our meal by sharing the bread pudding. The turtle soup was good, but honestly, my unrefined pallet thought it tasted a bit like a spiced beef stew with some wine in it. The smoked pork was truly smoked pork. Rarely have I tasted a smoked pork in a restaurant with this much smokey flavor. The shrimp and grits were also very good, but I recommend the pork. Lastly, the bread pudding souffle was very well done. It was light when it could have been overly heavy. All in all, I couldn’t have been happier starting my stay in New Orleans.
