Bootleg Wine (Family Recipe)

Some of you might be familiar with Grant’s Whiskey. If you are, then you know that it is not that deep red color. Inside that bottle in the picture is a bootleg grape wine made by my cousin’s husband’s father. Alcohol is prohibited in Sudan since it is an Islamic country, so smuggling alcohol or making it yourself is the only way a person can have any. I was incredibly honored to have them share some of this with me because it was one of their last bottles from a batch made a long time ago. The wine was rich and sweet like a Manischewitz with a molasses aftertaste. Due to the crude fermentation process, the wine also had a little bit of sediment in it, but it wasn’t noticeable unless you were looking at it in a glass. This was such a nice treat that I’ll never forget.
