Whole Coconuts

During dessert, one of my cousins put out these coconuts. When I asked what these were for, my cousin shrugged her shoulders and said in Arabic, “I don’t know. We don’t really eat them like that. We just wanted to try it.” Her brother took on the task of opening the coconuts using a wrench or some other crude object. His crude skills were evident when the coconuts came back cracked open with jagged edges. A few of my family members scratched out some of the coconut meat with a fork and tried it. They weren’t impressed without the shavings covered in sugar like the kind we often buy at the store.
