Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie – Ye Olde Pepper Company – 122 Derby Street, Salem, MA 01970 – Last, but not least on our trip to Salem was a visit to the “Oldest Candy Company in America.” We tried going the night before, but they were closed. Luckily, the next day they were not only open, but they were having a kind of open house where there were FREE treats. Yes! Free! The picture in the middle is a plate of homemade chocolates to sample. They even asked us if we wanted some hot chocolate or egg nog as we walked around! The picture on the left was taken through a window inside the shop where people were rolling candy canes in the back room. I’ve never seen such a thing done, but it was awesome! It really felt like being in Santa’s workshop or something. The store itself is pretty small, but you are surrounded by candy. Homemade chocolates, pre-packaged old candy, and even things I’d never seen before. We bought some candy canes, candy cigarettes, and Blackjacks. Blackjacks are the oldest stick candy ever made in America. It’s basically hard, crunchy, molasses in a round stick like a candy cane without the curved end or swirly colors. It’s actually quite good and had a burnt sugar taste. I’m glad we got to try it. If you ever get out to Salem, make sure to stop here!
