Family Dinner is a CSA delivery service that caters to the Metro Boston and South Shore areas. They reached out through a mutual friend to see if I would be interested in trying out a free sample of their service. I immediately jumped at the opportunity to have local produce, dairy, and proteins delivered to my door. What arrived was no less than a magnificent assortment of delicious treats from local farms and purveyors. Fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, yogurt, cheese, fish, and pizza dough all found their way right to my front door. In stark contrast to my excitement at receiving such an amazing sample, it wasn’t too long ago in the grand scheme of things that I didn’t know what a CSA was. As it turns out, it means “Community Supported Agriculture.” Now what does that mean? Well… usually it means that a group of people (or community) pay an up front fee (support) to a local farm (agriculture) and in return receive a share of the farm’s bounty. That share often comes in weekly installments of whatever is in season at the farm at the time. That definition has expanded to include not just agriculture, but dairy, farm raised animal products, and even fisheries as well.
In many cases, CSAs require people to go to the farm or some meeting place to pick up their shares. Additionally, supporters of local farms may have no idea what or how much they’re going to get each week. Some farms do a good job of updating their community supporters with specifics when they have them and others not so much. Nonetheless, for many people, the idea of making time in their schedule to pick up an unknown quantity of farm grown/raised products isn’t always an attractive option.
That’s where a service like Family Dinner really shines. The founders of Family Dinner, Erin and Tim are food lovers with two main values upon which their company is built – quality and convenience. That means getting access to the best local food at its peak freshness to truly taste what New England has to offer.
The service features a variety of curated packages that cater to individual tastes and preferences. They offer Omnivore, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, and even a Paleo option that all have different share sizes to accommodate anywhere from one to six people depending on how many people you need to feed. The absolute best part of the program is that while it is a subscription service that bills weekly, there are no contracts and customers can skip a week or cancel at any time. Sorry – I take it back – the best part of the program is that they bring all that delicious local food right to your door!
With my sample share, I found myself dizzy with possibilities for meals all week. Luckily, the delivery also comes with an emailed newsletter that not only describes what you receive, but also has some recipe suggestions for how to use the items. This is great, especially when you’ve never tried certain types of foods before. For example, it was recommended that we fry the fish we received. Done! And a side of fresh, crisp salad to boot!
With the corn and potatoes, my wife made a deliciously decadent corn chowder topped with crispy bacon bits and scallions.
Using the pizza dough we made… (you get one guess!)
Last, but not least, with the farm fresh eggs I made Shakshuka (a spicy Middle Eastern style tomato sauce featuring fresh vegetables and spices along with eggs poached in the sauce)!
We froze one of the pieces of fish that came in a vacuum sealed bag for later use and we found ourselves munching our way through the Greek yogurt, herbed cheese, and some of the other items all throughout the week.
If you’ve ever thought about trying a CSA, but didn’t think you’d have the time to go pick it up, or you have no idea where to sign up for a CSA, or you’re a veteran CSA subscriber that would like to start again, or you’re simply too lazy, then I recommend giving Family Dinner a shot. They do all the work of sourcing, curating, and delivering these fantastic local items right to your door (rain or shine). All you have to do is sign up for a commitment-free subscription!
