Other Electric Grills – I’ve used indoor electric grills before and the majority of them don’t give off much heat so it usually takes a very long time to cook most food. I’ve also noticed that many indoor electric grills that have covers or lids tend to have very little distance between the grill and the lid. That means using the lid causes the food to steam rather than grill nicely because the water vapor gets trapped. Lastly, trying to clean the grill grate of most electric grills after cooking by hand-washing in the sink was always just a nightmare.

My Opinion – In trying out the Hamilton Beach Indoor Searing Grill, I liked that the lid offered some depth or height between it and the grill surface. That meant that the food would cook faster with the heat retained, but the food wouldn’t steam because the water vapor could rise and escape easily. The lid also offered some limited splatter protection and limited smoke. As far as the power of this little unit, I thought it held its own as far as electric grills go. I will say, however, that I had to keep the temperature set at “Sear” the entire time I was cooking just to get that grilled feeling. Most outdoor grills cook at well above 400 degrees F, so the Sear setting is really where this grill needs to stay for performance. Anything lower, and the food might not get that nice grilled char. Overall, I thought the grill performed pretty well as an indoor grill substitute. The chicken I made using the grill tasted great (see the recipe below!) and I absolutely loved that cleanup was as easy as tossing everything into the dishwasher and wiping down the frame with a paper towel.

Recipe for Marinated and Grilled Chicken Thighs


  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons of brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon chili powder
  • Pinch of black pepper


  1. Place all of the ingredients in a shallow bowl with a lid or plastic zipper bag and seal it.
  2. Let the chicken marinate for at least 20 minutes, but up to a couple of hours in the fridge.
  3. Set the Hamilton Beach Searing Grill to the “Sear” temperature (the highest the knob will go) an close the lid.
  4. Once the green light indicates that the grill is at the desired temperature, open the lid and place the chicken thighs on the grill.
  5. Close the lid for the first 3 minutes and then open it for another 3 minutes.
  6. After 6 minutes, flip the chicken thighs and close the lid for another 3 minutes.

  7. After 3 minutes, open the lid and let the chicken keep cooking another 3 minutes or until the juices run clear.
  8. When the chicken is done, remove it and set on a plate to serve immediately. Eat the chicken as it is or chop it up for sandwiches!
  9. Turn off the grill and once it is cool, take it apart to put in the dishwasher for easy cleanup! The lid, grill plate, and grease tray are all dishwasher safe. The lid, however, is the biggest piece that some dishwasher may have trouble fitting, but a dishwasher with a light load should handle it.

  2. Used this indoor grill three times and there is already a buildup of grease on the bottom of the heating element. what to use to clean it?

    1. Hi Odette, thank you for your response, but I don’t own or have anything to do with Hamilton Beach other than I tried and reviewed their grill. You should reach out to them for questions regarding cleaning. I haven’t personally experienced grease buildup on the bottom of the heating element, so I’m not sure how to advise you.
